Drishyam
Drishyam (2015) starring Ajay Devgan, Tabu and Shriya Saran is undoubtedly one of the most engrossing thrillers made in Indian cinema. It was directed by Nishikant Kamat and is the remake of the 2013 Malyalam film of the same name which was originally written by Jitu Joseph and starred Mohan Lal and Meena in the lead roles. The plot set in Goa, revolves around Vijay Salgaokar and his family. Vijay Salgaokar, played by Ajay Devgan, is a middle class cable operator. Using his wit, the extent to which he goes to save his family is the crux of the film. The film was critically acclaimed and is considered to be one of Ajay Devgan’s and Tabu’s notable performances.
Kahaani
One of the most engaging thrillers of Bollywood is Kahaani (2012) starring Vidya Balan, Parambrata Chatterjee and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Written and directed by Sujoy Ghosh, Kahaani is the story of Vidya Bagchi (played by Vidya Balan) and her search for her missing husband. The story is complex and is gripping enough to keep you glued at the edge of your seat all throughout the film. Along with its story, direction and Vidya Balan’s strong performance, the film was also appreciated for its cinematography which was impeccable in portraying the characterization of Kolkatta city. The film won 5 film fare awards.
Kaun
Ram Gopal Varma’s Kaun (1999) is one of Bollywood’s intriguing psychological thriller films starring Urmila Matondkar and Manoj Bajpai. It also marks as one of the notable performances of Urmila Matondkar’s acting career. The plot is centred around a young girl who is alone at home waiting for her parents to return while an unknown serial killer is on the loose. This 90 minute film is gripping and intriguing and is filled with a number of plot twists and turns.
Darr
Darr is a 1993 romantic thriller film directed and produced by the legendary director Yash Chopra. With an ensemble star cast comprising Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, Sunny Deol and Anupam Kher, the film is considered to be one of Bollywood’s notable thrillers. It is one of the few movies in Indian cinema, where the protagonist of the film plays a negative role. The plot revolves around Rahul Mehra played by Shahrukh Khan who is obsessed about his college mate Kiran played by Juhi Chawla. However Kiran is not even aware of Rahul’s existence and is in love with her fiancé Sunil Malhotra played by Sunny Deol. The film keeps the audience engrossed and the intensity of the thrill keeps increasing with every scene. It won two film fare awards and is considered to be one of Shahrukh Khan’s significant performances.
Raman Raghav 2.0
One of the most unforgettable neo noir thriller films of this decade is Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016) which is written and directed by Anurag Kashyap. The film’s story is centred around the lives of the serial killer Ramanna (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and Inspector Raghavan Singh (Vicky Kaushal). The movie is divided into eight chapters and the director has ensured that every chapter remains equally gripping and engaging.
Trapped
Vikramaditya Motwane’s Trapped (2017) is the story of Shaurya played by Rajkumar Rao, who gets locked in his newly rented apartment. Without electricity and any charge left on his cell phone, Shaurya gets totally disconnected from the outside world and finds literally no way to free himself. Trapped is different from most thriller movies in the sense that it has very few characters, very few dialogues and 90 percent of the film is just Rajkumar Rao’s solo performance. In spite of all this, the film keeps you intrigued, engrossed and at the edge of your seats. Trapped was critically acclaimed for its fresh concept and has won 3 film fare awards.
